Devi was born in San Francisco but has lived in Australia most of her life. She has been a professional artist her whole adult life having studied classical piano and ballet from the age of 5. She started teaching piano at the age of 13 and eventually had to leave ballet behind as it was too hard to focus on both of her artistic pursuits.
However dance was always in the back of her mind waiting to be reignited. In 1996 Devi found herself in a belly dance class in the Blue Mountains N.S.W Australia. Devi’s teacher Kaiya Seaton was focused on folkloric Egyptian styles and this is where Devi gained her foundation in Middle Eastern dance. Soon after starting Devi’s teacher organised a video night of various styles of belly dance. This was Devi’s first introduction to ATS(r) she and fell in love with ATS (r) instantly. She was determined to somehow learn this style from the other side of the world.
Finally in 1999 Devi travelled to San Francisco to learn from Carolena and has never looked back. In 2000 she founded her troupe Ghawazi Caravan and has since been teaching and performing locally, around Australia and all over the globe. She was the first dancer in the Southern Hemisphere to complete teacher training and receive sister studio status and is proud and honoured to be part of the SSCE team. Devi and members of Ghawazi Caravan have also presented several of their Movement dialect steps and combinations on the FCBD DVD Vol 9 Anatomy of a step.
Personally Devi loves to collaborate with other artists and has been fortunate enough to collaborate with many well known and respected artists from around Australia and overseas including performing and co teaching GS with Carolena on several occasions. Devi is well known for her elegant stage presence and musicality and as a thorough and patient teacher.
