Heather Read, the founder and director of Tribal Angels Belly Dance based in Johannesburg is known as one of South Africa’s premier belly dancers performers, teachers and choreographers, having taught many well renowned teachers and dancers in the art of American Tribal Style® (ATS®), Tribal Fusion and Traditional Belly Dance within South Africa, U.K, USA and Europe.
With 40 years of dance experience Heather has had the amazing opportunity of dancing and performing on stage for most of her life. Heather discovered her passion for dance at the tender age of four when her mom enrolled her into ballet and tap classes at the Sylvia Heavener Dance and Drama Studio in Markham, Ontario, Canada.
When Heather was a young girl she moved to South Africa and was enrolled into the Carol Buch School of Dance, specializing in both modern dance and jazz, winning various dance awards for both solo and group performances
Heather has trained and performed extensively in the art of Middle Eastern belly dance and has a solid foundation in American Tribal Style® (ATS®), Tribal Fusion, Turkish and Lebanese belly dance, as well as in the contemporary and cabaret styles of belly dance.
Heather was first introduced to ATS® in Wendy Marlatt ‘s finger veil workshop at Tribalondon U.K. and it was Wendy who inspired Heather and advised her to pursue an ATS® Certification (General Skills), as well as an ATS® teacher training certificate through the creator of the ATS®, Carolena Nericcio – Bohlam of FatChanceBellyDance®
Heather followed Wendy’s advice and travelled to the USA to do her ATS® training with Carolena and in 2010 she became the very first ATS® Certified Instructor and FatChanceBellyDance® Sister Studio in South Africa.
Heather has trained with Rachel Brice, formally of BellyDance Superstars, in her 8 Elements™ intensive program, having trained in both the Initiation and Cultivation levels so far:
Heather’s most recently training was with the beautiful Devi Mamak of Ghawazi Caravan from the Blue Mountains of Australia. Devi’s Ghawazi Caravan and flamenco fusion styles have inspired Heather’s personal dance style and she now often uses Devi’s beautiful technique and elegance to enhance and beautify many of her own solo and troupe performances.
Heather is also an original member of Troupe InternATSional (TI), a premier group of acclaimed ATS® belly dancers from around the world (UK, USA, Canada and South Africa) who perform at international events.Heather has performed at the Cues and Tattoo’s festival in Seattle on various occasions with TI, as well as at Devi Mamak’s Intensives and show in Essex, U.K.
In 2013 Heather had the great honor of being invited by the Goddess Divine Festival as a judge for the Miss Belly Dance South Competition alongside, Jillina Carlano of the Belly Dance Super Stars and Belly Dance Evolution, Heather Aued also from Belly Dance Evolution and local teachers and dancers, Bhana van der Walt and Senta Duffeild.
Heather is also a certified Zumba and group training instructor and holds a British Confederation diploma in Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Massage Therapy, post and pre operative care (MLD) for plastic surgery, vein removal and Aesthetics.
