What comes to mind when you hear words “simple, elegant, playful, charming, cheerful, sweet, sassy, fun”?
Pretty much any tribal belly dancer will instantly say, “Bessie!”
The exclusive line of performance class and off-stage apparel designed by Kathleen Crowley in collaboration with Carolena Nericcio has become a must-have for many women who can now enjoy the exquisite elegance of ATS® in everyday life.
The following Bessie Line pieces are in production and available now in our shop.
The Bessie skirt is a full-length mermaid-styled skirt that is usually crafted from a heavy cotton-lycra blend. There is a waist “band” that can be folded down over the hips or worn over your torso. There is a hem band at the bottom of the skirt with seven fabric loops that can be attached to three buttons at the hip for a variety of looks. It can be wrapped around you, hiked up at the sides, bustled, or left down. The front is higher than the back so that it can trail behind you if you like.
The lined vest is styled to ride nicely over the hips. There is a slight racer-back element to the cut, and it can be worn with or without a top underneath. It has stretch panels to allow for comfort and ease of wearing. It has two pockets in front and a wide lapel and collar. We also put a little pocket on the inside lining for your lipstick! There are 32 pieces in this vest – not simple at all!
Bessie Plait Wrap
The Plait Wrap was Carolena’s idea. I’m not sure where she got it from, but it was suggested by dancers with short hair having a hard time adding and keeping flowers in their hair. This wrap is a perfect solution to the problem – it enables you to comfortably wrap your head with braided fabric and pin flowers and jewelry to your wrap. Very easy to use.
Bessie Assuit Shawl
Originally made in the village of Assuit in Egypt, Assuit fabric has the ability to stop dancers in the tracks. While the concept of “silver metal strips woven into a sturdy cotton/linen fabric” doesn’t sound sexy, the effect of liquid silver pouring over the body only needs to be experienced once to create a life-long craving. Our shawls are made from contemporary Assuit, still made in Egypt, and will add luscious accent to any Bessie outfit or dance costume.Size: 26″ x 75.5″
Bessie Choli Dress
Kathleen and Carolena have put their heads together to create a brand new garment for ATS® dancers. The Choli Dress is literally a choli sewn inside an open-backed dress. The choli hugs your curves while the dress floats gracefully over your curves. With cap sleeves and side slits the famous Bessie buttons and loops allow 4 levels of customization:
- Let the back panels float open.
- Button the back panels to hug the ribcage, creating a flattering shape over shoulders and torso.
- Button the tails of the dress to close the back.
- Unbutton the ribcage for a looser fit and button the tails to close the back.
The choli fits like your regular choli, so you can order your usual size.

Plus sizes are on the design table and we hope to have them in 2016 as well.
Fabric: choli is medium-weight cotton/Lycra, dress is a lightweight rayon/Lycra. Hand wash, line dry.
